UNESCO has condemned the killing of Mexican journalist Josu\u00e9 Mart\u00ednez Contreras and urged authorities to swiftly bring his attackers to justice. Mart\u00ednez Contreras, founder of the digital outlet Noticias San Mart\u00edn Texmelucan<\/em>, was shot dead in front of his son near their home in Puebla State on July 16, 2026, in an attack that has intensified concerns over journalist safety in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNESCO Director\u2011General Khaled El\u2011Enany said the murder highlights the escalating risks faced by reporters in Mexico, one of the world\u2019s most dangerous countries for media workers. He warned that impunity for such crimes continues to embolden perpetrators and undermines press freedom across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement issued Thursday, El\u2011Enany called for a thorough investigation and urged Mexican authorities to hold those responsible accountable. He said attacks on journalists threaten the public\u2019s right to information and weaken democratic institutions. \u201cImpunity for crimes against journalists must not be tolerated, as it only emboldens the perpetrators,\u201d he said, urging officials to \u201cdo everything within their powers to prevent such attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mart\u00ednez Contreras had previously expressed fear for his safety. In November 2025, he posted a video saying his life was under threat because of his reporting on security issues, municipal administration and public services in San Mart\u00edn Texmelucan. Mexican authorities have opened an investigation, but press\u2011freedom advocates note that convictions in such cases remain rare. They argue that stronger protections, faster investigations and better coordination between federal and state agencies are essential to reversing the trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
