The Niger Delta Development Commission has reaffirmed its support for Nigeria\u2019s efforts to reduce maternal and newborn deaths by training traditional birth attendants in safer delivery practices. The commitment was announced during workshops held in Delta and Bayelsa states, where participants received instruction on modern maternal and neonatal care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NDDC disclosed the initiative in a statement issued Wednesday in Port Harcourt by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson\u2011Wakama. Managing Director Samuel Ogbuku, represented by the Principal Manager for Education, Health and Social Services, Dare\u2011Oloko Kuami, urged women to combine traditional methods with formal medical care to improve outcomes for mothers and infants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He described current mortality levels as unacceptable and called for stronger community awareness. The commission said the programme supports global efforts to reduce preventable maternal deaths, aligning with international health targets under the UN Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ogbuku said the training was designed to equip traditional birth attendants with skills for safer delivery, early detection of complications, and timely referral of high\u2011risk cases to health facilities. Officials noted that the initiative aims to strengthen frontline care in underserved communities where access to formal medical services remains limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commission added that traditional birth attendants remain essential in rural areas, making targeted training critical for improving maternal and newborn survival. It said the workshops were structured to enhance practical knowledge and reinforce collaboration between community caregivers and formal health systems.
