Zabihullah Amiri, head of the Taliban\u2011run information and culture department in Badakhshan, was shot dead Tuesday while traveling toward Faizabad. IS\u2011K said its fighters targeted \u201ca commander from the apostate Taliban militia\u201d with machine\u2011gun fire, according to a statement monitored by SITE Intelligence Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taliban authorities said security forces killed one attacker and arrested another after what the Information Ministry called a \u201ccowardly assault.\u201d Amiri was a nephew of Amanuddin Mansur, the Taliban governor of Helmand province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The killing highlights IS\u2011K\u2019s continued ability to strike Taliban officials despite repeated claims from Kabul that security has improved nationwide. Badakhshan, which borders Tajikistan and China, has seen sporadic violence and remains strategically sensitive for regional governments worried about cross\u2011border militant activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
