The Kano State Government has commissioned a new Sickle Cell Centre and a state Disease Control Centre, marking a significant step in efforts to improve healthcare services and strengthen the state’s capacity to respond to infectious disease outbreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf inaugurated the two facilities on Monday, describing them as critical investments aimed at addressing longstanding public health challenges in one of Nigeria’s most populous states. The projects are expected to improve access to specialized care for people living with sickle cell disease while enhancing disease surveillance and emergency response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newly established Sickle Cell Centre will provide specialized diagnosis, treatment and counseling for patients living with the inherited blood disorder, which affects millions of people across Nigeria. Health experts have long called for greater investment in sickle cell care, citing the country’s high burden of the disease and the need for improved access to early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside the specialized centre, the state also unveiled a modern Disease Control Centre designed to strengthen Kano’s preparedness for outbreaks of infectious diseases. The facility will support disease monitoring, laboratory services, emergency coordination and rapid response efforts, helping public health officials detect and contain potential outbreaks more effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Yusuf said the projects reflect his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and expanding access to quality medical services. The facility is also expected to improve collaboration with national health agencies during public health emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria carries one of the world’s highest burdens of sickle cell disease, with thousands of babies born with the condition each year. Medical professionals have consistently advocated for expanded newborn screening, public awareness campaigns and greater access to specialized treatment to reduce complications and improve survival rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents and healthcare workers welcomed the inauguration of the facilities, expressing hope that they will improve the quality of healthcare available in the state.
