RABAT, Morocco (FN)<\/strong> \u2014 FIFA President Gianni Infantino has called an emergency meeting of the organization’s senior leadership in Rabat following mounting criticism over a failed proposal to bring private investment into a company that would oversee the commercial operations of FIFA tournaments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting, scheduled after the weekend, will bring together FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom and members of the governing body’s management board as officials seek to address the fallout from the abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The emergency session comes days after FIFA withdrew plans to establish a separate commercial company responsible for managing the business and operational aspects of its competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal, first reported by The Times<\/em> and the Financial Times<\/em>, envisioned selling a 20 percent stake in the new company to private investors. FIFA has not publicly identified potential investors or disclosed financial details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal drew swift opposition from several continental football confederations, which argued that outside investment could undermine FIFA’s independence. UEFA, the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) all rejected the plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dispute comes as FIFA prepares for its largest-ever tournaments, including the expanded 48-team 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico and a revamped Club World Cup. The governing body has increasingly expanded its commercial activities, making decisions over revenue and governance more significant for football worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supporters of the FFE proposal argued it would improve operational efficiency and create new sources of investment. Founded in 1904, FIFA oversees 211 member associations and has spent the past decade rebuilding its reputation following the 2015 corruption scandal, which led to sweeping governance reforms.
