The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has begun addressing admission irregularities within its Faculty of Law, directing affected students to return to the academic programmes for which they were originally offered admission through Nigeria’s Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the country’s tertiary education admissions agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The directive follows a review of admission records that found discrepancies between the programmes approved by JAMB and those in which some students were studying at the university. Under Nigeria’s admission system, students are required to study only the programmes for which they receive official admission through JAMB, unless a formal change of course is approved by the admissions board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the university has not disclosed the total number of students affected, the move is part of efforts to align its admission records with national regulations governing tertiary education and to safeguard the integrity of academic qualifications. UNICAL said affected students must return to their original programmes as reflected in JAMB’s records. The university also indicated that the measure is intended to ensure compliance with admission procedures and prevent future complications related to graduation, professional accreditation and the recognition of academic credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAMB, which oversees admissions into Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, requires institutions to admit students only into programmes approved through its Central Admission Processing System (CAPS). Any transfer from one programme to another must receive the necessary approvals from both the institution and JAMB. The development underscores the importance of strict adherence to admission regulations in Nigeria’s higher education sector, particularly in professionally regulated disciplines such as law, where compliance with accreditation and admission requirements is closely monitored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admission-related irregularities have surfaced at several Nigerian universities in recent years, prompting regulatory authorities to tighten oversight and require institutions to reconcile their admission records with JAMB’s database. Such reviews are aimed at protecting the credibility of university qualifications and ensuring students graduate with degrees recognized by regulators and employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It remains unclear whether affected students will be allowed to appeal the decision or whether additional reviews will be conducted.
