While the exact number of casualties has not been independently verified, the reported deaths are seen as another indication of the fierce rivalry between the two extremist factions.

Neither the Nigerian military nor Borno State authorities had immediately confirmed the reported ambush, and no official casualty figures were available. Details of the incident remain based on local security sources because access to conflict-affected areas is limited, making independent verification difficult.

The reported killings underscore the continuing struggle for dominance between JAS and ISWAP, whose competition for territory, recruits, weapons and supply routes has fueled repeated clashes alongside attacks on civilians, humanitarian workers and government forces. Security analysts say infighting between the factions has become a defining feature of the insurgency in recent years, even as both groups continue to pose a significant threat across the Lake Chad region.

ISWAP-Terrorists

Bama and its surrounding communities have long been at the center of Nigeria’s counterinsurgency campaign because of their proximity to the Sambisa Forest, once the main stronghold of Boko Haram, and key transit routes linking northeastern Nigeria with neighboring Chad, Cameroon and Niger. The area has witnessed repeated military offensives, militant attacks and population displacement over the past decade.

Boko Haram launched its insurgency in northeastern Nigeria in 2009, seeking to establish an Islamic state under its interpretation of Islamic law. The conflict has since evolved into one of Africa’s deadliest security crises, spreading across the Lake Chad Basin. According to the United Nations, the violence has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, creating one of the world’s largest humanitarian emergencies.

The militant movement fractured in 2016 after the Islamic State recognized Abu Musab al-Barnawi as the leader of its West African affiliate, leading to the emergence of ISWAP while the Abubakar Shekau-led faction continued operating as JAS. Although Shekau died in 2021 during clashes with ISWAP, the two factions have continued fighting for control of territory and influence, with ISWAP generally regarded by analysts as the stronger and more organized group.

The latest reported confrontation highlights the persistent instability in northeastern Nigeria despite years of military operations by Nigerian forces and regional partners under the Multinational Joint Task Force. Analysts say continued rivalry between ISWAP and JAS could weaken individual factions but is also likely to prolong insecurity, disrupt civilian life and complicate efforts to stabilize communities recovering from years of conflict. Authorities have not indicated whether additional military operations have been launched in response to the reported ambush, and officials have yet to release further information on the identities of those killed or the broader operational impact of the clash.

Several senior commanders of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS), one of the main factions of Boko Haram, were reportedly killed after fighters from the rival Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) ambushed them in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno State, according to local security sources.
