The weeks that follow can feel long. Students check JAMB CAPS, visit their school’s admission portal and compare updates with friends, hoping to see the message that confirms they have finally secured a place. For parents, the uncertainty can be just as stressful, especially when they are already thinking about school fees, accommodation and other expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But waiting does not have to mean doing nothing. While universities and JAMB have the final say on admissions, students and their families can use the period to get ready for what comes next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the easiest things parents can do is put important documents together early. Schools may ask for WAEC or NECO results, a JAMB result slip, birth certificate, certificate of state of origin and passport photographs during registration. Having these documents ready can save a family from rushing around when an admission offer finally arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For students who will be leaving home for university, this is also a good time to think about where and how they will live. Finding out about hostels, private accommodation, transportation and the cost of living around the school can prevent unpleasant surprises after resumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents can also speak with people who already have children in the institution. Current students can offer practical advice about accommodation, feeding, transportation and other aspects of campus life that may not appear in an official school brochure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students, meanwhile, can use the waiting period to prepare academically. University courses can be demanding, and revisiting basic topics related to an intended course can make the transition from secondary school easier. The period can also be used to learn everyday skills. Knowing how to use Microsoft Word and Excel, manage time, prepare simple meals, budget money and communicate professionally may not appear on a university timetable, but these skills can make student life much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
