Seyi Makinde

Oyo State Gov. Seyi Makinde has questioned whether Nigeria’s economic growth is translating into meaningful improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens, despite official figures showing an expansion in gross domestic product. Makinde acknowledged that Nigeria’s GDP is growing but said the more important question is whether Nigerians can actually feel the impact of that growth in their daily lives.

His comments reflect a long-standing challenge in Africa’s largest economy, where periods of economic expansion have not always resulted in broad improvements in living standards. Nigeria has experienced several episodes of GDP growth over the past two decades, particularly during the oil boom years, yet poverty, unemployment and rising living costs have remained major concerns.

The issue has become more pressing in recent years as Nigerians contend with elevated food prices, a weakened naira and higher costs for transportation and other basic necessities. The country’s economy was also hit by a recession in 2016 and another contraction in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic before returning to growth.

Removal of Petrol subsidy, one of Nigeria`s latest economic reforms

Nigeria’s latest economic reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and changes to the foreign-exchange system, have been aimed at strengthening public finances and attracting investment. However, the measures have also contributed to short-term economic pressures for households and businesses.

Makinde’s remarks highlight the distinction between headline economic indicators and everyday economic realities. While GDP growth can signal increased production and economic activity, its broader success is often measured by whether it creates jobs, improves purchasing power and raises living standards.

The governor’s question therefore goes beyond the latest growth figures, touching on a central issue in Nigeria’s economic debate: how to ensure that national economic gains are translated into tangible benefits for the country’s more than 200 million people.

Oyo State Gov.
