ABUJA, Nigeria<\/strong> \u2014 Nigeria and the Muslim World League are bringing religious leaders, policymakers and security stakeholders together in Abuja on Tuesday for an international conference focused on security, peaceful coexistence and national unity as Nigeria continues to confront terrorism, banditry and other threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Bola Tinubu is expected to use the gathering to promote greater cooperation and dialogue, while Muslim World League Secretary-General Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa has arrived in Abuja for the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference comes as Nigeria faces persistent security challenges across several regions, including attacks by armed groups, kidnappings and communal violence. The government has increasingly emphasized cooperation between security agencies, communities and religious leaders as part of its response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Abuja conference provides an opportunity to move that message beyond Nigeria’s domestic political debate and into a broader international discussion involving religious and policy leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Muslim World League, based in Saudi Arabia, is an international Islamic organization that has increasingly promoted interfaith dialogue, religious moderation and cooperation among communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Issa’s participation gives the conference an international dimension at a time when governments across Africa and the Middle East are seeking ways to counter violent extremism while preventing religious differences from becoming sources of wider conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The security challenges also extend beyond Nigeria’s borders. Insurgent groups operate across parts of the Lake Chad Basin, while criminal and armed networks move across porous borders in West Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria has previously participated in regional discussions aimed at developing coordinated approaches to terrorism and instability in West Africa and the Sahel. At a security conference in Ghana earlier this year, Nigerian officials called for a flexible and inclusive counterterrorism strategy to address threats that cross national borders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Abuja meeting is also expected to highlight the role of religious leaders in preventing radicalization and encouraging peaceful relations between different faith communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country and has large Christian and Muslim populations. Religious identity is deeply woven into social and political life, making cooperation between faith leaders an important part of efforts to maintain national cohesion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But analysts and civil society groups have often stressed that religious dialogue alone cannot resolve insecurity. Effective policing, intelligence gathering, economic opportunities, justice and accountable governance are also important in addressing the causes and consequences of violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tinubu’s message is likely to center on unity and cooperation, while the presence of the Muslim World League leadership underscores the international religious dimension of the discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether the conference produces concrete initiatives remains to be seen. But its focus reflects a growing recognition that Nigeria’s security challenges require more than military action alone and that cooperation across religious, political and national boundaries will be necessary for lasting stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria’s current security challenges have deep roots. Boko Haram’s insurgency began in northeastern Nigeria more than 15 years ago and later evolved into several factions. The violence spread across borders into Niger, Chad and Cameroon, turning the Lake Chad Basin into a regional security concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, insecurity expanded beyond the traditional northeast insurgency, with kidnapping and armed banditry becoming major concerns in parts of northern and central Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has responded through military operations and regional cooperation, but officials increasingly acknowledge that security measures must be accompanied by efforts to promote social cohesion, economic opportunity and peaceful relations among communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
