Mohammed Ma\u2019aji, accused of playing a leading role in an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu\u2019s government, has told investigators that patriotism and frustration over conditions in Nigeria were among the factors that motivated his actions, according to documents and testimony reported during proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ma\u2019aji\u2019s explanation provides an account of how he viewed the situation in the country and within the military. However, his stated motivations are not evidence that the alleged coup was justified, and the allegations against him remain subject to judicial proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case centers on an alleged conspiracy involving serving and retired military personnel and civilians. Nigerian authorities began arresting military officers in September 2025 after an investigation into suspected plans to undermine the constitutional government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Military investigators have identified Ma\u2019aji as a central figure in the alleged conspiracy. A protected prosecution witness told the Federal High Court in Abuja in April that intelligence reports linked Ma\u2019aji to other suspects and to an alleged plan to overthrow Tinubu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to documents reviewed in reporting on the investigation, Ma\u2019aji expressed concern about the welfare and treatment of Nigerian military personnel. Ma\u2019aji has challenged the jurisdiction and competence of the military court handling charges against him. His lawyers argued that the charges were defective and that the allegations did not properly constitute the offenses cited against him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
