WASHINGTON \u2014<\/strong> President Donald Trump says the United States will demand compensation from Iran for Americans killed or wounded in conflicts linked to Tehran, adding a new obstacle to negotiations over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump said he had instructed U.S. representatives to make compensation part of future negotiations. He was responding to Iranian demands that Washington compensate Iran for damage caused during the five-month conflict. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump said Iran should compensate families of people killed or seriously wounded in attacks and conflicts involving Iranian forces or groups backed by Tehran. He also referenced casualties connected to the USS Cole attack and other conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The competing compensation demands highlight how difficult it may be for Washington and Tehran to reach a broader agreement. Iran has linked the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to several conditions, including compensation for wartime damage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman that connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. It is one of the world’s most important energy routes, carrying a significant portion of globally traded oil and gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has said the Strait is open, but Iranian officials have indicated that full reopening remains dependent on negotiations and Tehran’s conditions. Iran has also been discussing shipping arrangements with Oman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump’s compensation demand now adds another issue to negotiations already complicated by disagreements over sanctions, security guarantees, Iran’s nuclear program and control of shipping through the Strait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
