Video footage shows Trump publicly boarding the familiar blue and white presidential aircraft, while other images show a catering vehicle positioned near the plane. The vehicle was reportedly used to help move Trump discreetly to another aircraft without drawing attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to U.S. officials cited in recent reporting, the Secret Service considered the threat credible enough to change the president\u2019s travel arrangements at short notice. Trump and a small group of aides were transferred to a less conspicuous C-32A military aircraft, while Air Force One continued separately and effectively served as a decoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The security operation came as tensions between the United States and Iran were high. Officials were concerned that the president or his aircraft could potentially be targeted, including by a missile. He said he was following instructions from the Secret Service and military officials, who wanted him to use a \u201cdifferent plane\u201d because of a threat. \u201cI guess there was a threat out there,\u201d Trump said, adding that he receives threats frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unusual decision meant that many people traveling with the president were unaware that he was no longer aboard the aircraft they believed was carrying him home. Senior administration officials and members of the traveling press corps remained on Air Force One as it continued its journey, turning the plane into part of the deception. Trump had arrived in Turkey aboard the aircraft but did not use it for his return journey. Instead, the plane was sent ahead to Mildenhall Air Force Base in Britain, while Trump appeared to leave aboard the older Air Force One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secret presidential travel has happened before when security concerns demanded unusual measures. Former President George W. Bush secretly visited Baghdad in 2003, while President Bill Clinton made an undisclosed trip from India to Pakistan in 2000. Barack Obama also made a surprise visit to U.S. troops in Afghanistan in 2014, and Trump and first lady Melania Trump made a surprise Christmas visit to U.S. troops in Iraq in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What made Trump\u2019s departure from Turkey particularly unusual was the elaborate deception surrounding the aircraft switch and the fact that much of his traveling entourage did not know what had happened until later.
