HARARE, Zimbabwe \u2014 What began as an ordinary journey across Lake Kariba ended in tragedy this week, leaving dozens of families grieving and a community struggling to understand how so many lives were lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 46 people have died after an overloaded ferry capsized Tuesday in the waters of Lake Kariba, one of Zimbabwe’s worst recent passenger boat disasters. Rescue teams have recovered bodies from the lake while continuing efforts to account for everyone who was aboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ferry was carrying people traveling between Kariba town and remote fishing communities. Authorities believe as many as 153 people may have been on board, well above the vessel’s stated capacity of 90. At least 77 people have been rescued, but uncertainty remains over the exact number of passengers because some children may not have been included in ticket records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Survivors have described a terrifying struggle as the ferry encountered rough water and began to overturn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chance Siyamavhu, who survived the disaster, said he watched helplessly from the overturned vessel as other passengers fought to stay above water. He told AFP that his best friend and seven relatives were among those who died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThank God that a wave pushed the sinking vessel and we managed to climb on top,\u201d Siyamavhu said at a memorial service in Kariba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For other survivors, the memories are equally painful. Passengers reportedly raised concerns about the rough conditions before the ferry capsized, while some struggled to find or distribute life jackets as the situation deteriorated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tragedy has left families facing the painful task of identifying loved ones. At a memorial service in Kariba, mourners gathered around coffins as officials and relatives paid tribute to those who died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For some families, the grief was overwhelming. Associated Press reported that one mourner broke down after seeing her father’s name on a coffin during the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared a state of disaster and directed government agencies to mobilize resources for rescue and recovery operations. The disaster has also renewed questions about ferry safety, overcrowding and the condition of vessels operating on Lake Kariba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lake Kariba is more than a body of water for communities along its shores. It is an important transportation route for people who live in remote areas where roads can be difficult to use. Fishing and trade also depend heavily on the lake, making boats an essential part of everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lake Kariba itself was created in the 1950s following construction of the Kariba Dam on the Zambezi River. Today, the vast reservoir stretches along the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia and is an important source of hydroelectric power, fishing and transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, as rescue crews continue their work, attention is turning to what went wrong and whether stronger safety measures could prevent another tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the families who lost loved ones, however, those questions will not ease the immediate pain. They are left mourning parents, children, spouses, siblings and friends whose lives were suddenly cut short on the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
