She left her family home in 2025 after alleging that she had been abused by her older siblings and pressured to accept a marriage she did not want.

After her parents died, Sarah stayed with a Christian family known as the Abaras. While living with them, she converted to Christianity, according to Alliance Defending Freedom International, which supported her legal case.

Her decision reportedly angered some of her relatives. They later involved Hisbah officials, who arrested Sarah and held her for four days, according to her account. She said she was beaten and pressured to agree to the proposed marriage.

After being released, Sarah feared that she could be detained again. The Abaras helped her move to Jos in January 2026, where she sought safety.

Her relatives later accused members of the Christian family of kidnapping her. Two members of the family were subsequently taken to court in Kano, according to ADF International.

Federal High Court in Kano

Sarah filed a fundamental rights case in February, arguing that the actions against her violated her constitutional rights. The court agreed and ordered Kano authorities and Hisbah officials not to arrest or harass her because of her faith or her decision not to marry.

The decision has been welcomed by religious freedom advocates.

“The court’s ruling in Sarah’s case affirms that the Hisbah police have no jurisdiction over Christians or other non Muslims,” said Sean Nelson, senior counsel for global religious freedom at ADF International. He described Sarah’s decision to change her religion and reject a forced marriage as rights protected by Nigerian law.

The case has attracted attention because of the sensitive relationship between religious authority and constitutional rights in northern Nigeria.

Kano is among several northern states that operate Sharia based legal systems alongside Nigeria’s federal laws. Hisbah organizations operate in these states and are generally associated with enforcing Islamic moral standards among Muslims. The court’s decision therefore raises an important question about how those constitutional protections apply when religious practices come into conflict with individual rights.

The case also highlights concerns about forced marriage, an issue that continues to affect women and girls in parts of Nigeria and other countries.

For Sarah, the ruling offers some relief after months of uncertainty. But the wider legal dispute is not completely over. The separate case involving members of the Christian family accused of kidnapping her remains ongoing.

Her identity continues to be protected because of concerns for her safety.

Beyond the courtroom, the case is likely to fuel further discussion in Nigeria about religious freedom, women’s rights and the limits of religious enforcement bodies.

For Sarah, however, the issue is much more personal. The court’s decision means she has greater legal protection to make choices about her faith and her future without fear of being arrested simply for refusing a religion or marriage she does not want.

KANO, Nigeria — A Nigerian court has stepped in to protect a young woman who said she was threatened with arrest and forced marriage after leaving Islam and becoming a Christian.
