JOS, Nigeria \u2014 Lecturers at Plateau State University have begun an indefinite strike, halting academic activities at the state owned institution as a long running dispute over salaries, pensions, staff welfare and campus security deepens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Plateau State University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, announced the walkout after a 14 day ultimatum to university authorities expired without an agreement. The union described the action as \u201ctotal, comprehensive and indefinite\u201d and directed members to suspend academic duties until further notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strike was approved after a meeting of the union\u2019s congress and authorization from ASUU\u2019s National Executive Council. Branch Chairperson Vincent D. Choji and Secretary Lomka Iliya Kopdiya said lecturers were not satisfied with the response to a six point list of demands they had presented to the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCongress is convinced that the substance of our demands on all six items has not been satisfactorily addressed,\u201d the union said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the centre of the dispute is the implementation of a 2025 agreement between Nigeria\u2019s federal government and ASUU, including a new salary structure. The Plateau State University lecturers are demanding payment of arrears dating to Jan. 1, 2026, as well as 22 months of outstanding payments connected to an earlier 25 percent and 35 percent wage award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lecturers are also demanding the introduction of a contributory pension program, secure accommodation for university employees and additional protection around the campus. Among their security requests is the construction of trenches around the university\u2019s perimeter fence. The union has also accused university authorities of intimidating some of its leaders, an allegation the institution had not publicly answered as of Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security is a particularly sensitive issue at the university, which is located in Bokkos, an area of Plateau state that has experienced repeated attacks and communal violence. University officials sought greater police protection in 2024, citing criminal trespassing and attacks affecting staff and students. In April of that year, the university temporarily closed after a student was killed in an attack on the nearby Chikam community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For students, the latest shutdown brings back memories of previous disruptions. Lecturers at the university began another indefinite strike in November 2023, and by February 2024, students frustrated by three months without classes marched through Jos to the Plateau State Government House. The dispute at the time also centered on staff welfare, infrastructure and conditions on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plateau State University has faced similar labor disputes before. In 2021, lecturers walked off the job over insecurity, poor infrastructure and unpaid allowances, highlighting problems that have resurfaced in various forms over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest action is not limited to Plateau. Lecturers at several state owned universities across Nigeria have also begun strikes or threatened industrial action over what ASUU describes as inconsistent implementation of the 2025 agreement. Universities in Nasarawa, Edo, Ondo and other states are among those affected, increasing concerns that a wider disruption could again unsettle Nigeria\u2019s public university system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Plateau State University students, however, the immediate concern is when classrooms will reopen. With no end date attached to the strike and no publicly announced settlement, lectures and other academic activities are expected to remain suspended until the union and authorities reach an agreement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
