President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday ordered a comprehensive reform of Nigeria\u2019s football system following a series of disappointing results involving the country\u2019s senior men\u2019s and women\u2019s national teams. Tinubu said the overhaul was necessary to address longstanding structural problems that have prevented Nigeria from consistently converting its deep pool of football talent, significant public investment and passionate fan base into sustained international success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The directive comes amid growing scrutiny of the administration of Nigerian football and the performance of the national teams. The setbacks have renewed calls for stronger governance, better youth development, improved infrastructure and greater accountability within the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria has historically been one of Africa\u2019s football powers. The men\u2019s national team, the Super Eagles, won the Africa Cup of Nations three times, in 1980, 1994 and 2013 and reached the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup in 1994, 1998 and 2014. The women\u2019s national team, the Super Falcons, have dominated African women\u2019s football, winning a record 11 Women\u2019s Africa Cup of Nations titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria also has a long record of producing internationally recognized players, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in major European leagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite that history, inconsistent administration, funding concerns, infrastructure challenges and weaknesses in grassroots development have repeatedly raised questions about the sustainability of Nigeria\u2019s football system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tinubu\u2019s order signals an attempt to address those issues at a structural level rather than focusing solely on the performance of individual coaches or players.
