PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria \u2014<\/strong> Police in Nigeria\u2019s southern Rivers State have sealed a hotel in Port Harcourt and begun investigating the death of a young man identified as Okorite Charles after his family disputed an initial account that he fell from a balcony and demanded access to surveillance footage from the property. The circumstances of his death remained unclear Friday, and authorities have not announced a formal cause of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charles, reported to be in his mid-20s, died early Thursday at the unnamed hotel in Eagle Island Estate. His relatives and friends gathered at the property after learning of his death at about 5 a.m., leading officers from the Azikiwe Police Division to intervene as tensions rose. The family said it had been told Charles fell from the balcony of a two-story building at the rear of the hotel, but relatives questioned that account after visiting the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His elder brother, identified as Obomate, said family members saw what they believed were signs of a struggle and traces of blood. He also said a doctor who examined Charles told relatives that some injuries appeared inconsistent with a simple fall, including what the doctor suspected might be a stab wound. Those claims have not been independently verified, and no official autopsy findings have been released. \u201cMy brother cannot die like that,\u201d Obomate said as he called for a thorough investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rivers State police spokesperson Blessing Agabe said Charles had first been taken to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead, before relatives and friends returned with his remains to the hotel seeking an explanation. Police later sealed the property and arrested about five people, including individuals who had been with Charles the previous night and some hotel employees, as investigators sought to establish what happened. No charges had been announced. \u201cThe investigation is ongoing to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the incident,\u201d Agabe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The family has placed particular emphasis on obtaining the hotel\u2019s closed-circuit television, or CCTV, recordings. Such footage could help investigators reconstruct Charles\u2019 movements, establish who was with him before his death and test conflicting accounts of how he sustained his injuries. Police temporarily ordered guests and other occupants to leave the hotel, a measure authorities said was part of efforts to secure the scene while the investigation continued. Charles\u2019 body was taken to an undisclosed mortuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case illustrates why forensic evidence is especially important when a death is sudden, unexplained or potentially violent. International forensic practice generally calls for a medicolegal investigation in suspicious deaths, which can include examination of the body and an autopsy to establish the cause and manner of death. Police have not said whether a post-mortem examination has been completed or disclosed what investigators have recovered from the hotel. Until forensic findings, witness accounts and any available CCTV footage are examined, it remains unclear whether Charles died from an accident, an assault or another cause.
