ABUJA, Nigeria<\/strong> \u2014 Nigeria is intensifying efforts to raise crude oil production to 2.5 million barrels a day, relying on new investment, revived fields, deepwater projects and tighter security around pipelines and export infrastructure. Petroleum Resources Minister Heineken Lokpobiri has said the government\u2019s production target remains 2.5 million barrels a day, arguing that sustained investment and increased exploration will be critical to achieving it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The target remains ambitious compared with current output. Nigeria produced about 1.505 million barrels of crude a day in July, along with roughly 170,000 barrels a day of condensates, bringing combined production to about 1.67 million barrels a day, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission. The country has nevertheless met or exceeded its 1.5 million-barrel OPEC crude quota for three consecutive months, following a June average of 1.56 million barrels a day of crude, the highest level since April 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Government officials are betting heavily on offshore development to close the gap. President Bola Tinubu this month approved a new fiscal and regulatory framework aimed at attracting as much as $50 billion into deepwater oil and gas projects and reviving developments that have been stalled for years. Earlier in 2026, the government also resolved the long-running dispute over OPL 245, clearing a major legal obstacle to development of one of Nigeria\u2019s prominent deepwater assets. Officials have pointed to projects including Shell\u2019s multibillion-dollar Bonga North development as evidence that international capital is beginning to return to the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security is the other major part of the strategy. Oil theft, vandalism and militant attacks in the Niger Delta have repeatedly reduced production and discouraged investment over the past two decades. NNPC said last year that coordinated military, intelligence and private-security operations had sharply reduced pipeline theft, with a much larger share of crude reaching export terminals. Finance Minister Wale Edun welcomed the recent production recovery, saying in April that output of about 1.84 million barrels a day was \u201cfantastic news\u201d and consistent with Tinubu\u2019s mandate to expand production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria was once capable of producing close to 2.5 million barrels a day, but output declined as aging infrastructure, underinvestment, theft and unrest hit the industry. The Petroleum Industry Act of 2021 was designed to overhaul regulation and make investment rules clearer, while subsequent executive orders have sought to shorten contracting periods and reduce project costs. The NUPRC says Nigeria has more than 37 billion barrels of crude reserves, but has acknowledged that large reserves alone will not translate into higher output without capital, technology and faster project execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The effort matters well beyond Nigeria. Africa\u2019s largest oil producer remains an important supplier of light, low-sulfur crude to international markets, while higher output would also provide more feedstock for domestic refineries, including the giant Dangote refinery near Lagos. Increased production could bolster government revenue, foreign-exchange earnings and the naira, but the 2.5 million-barrel target will depend on whether Nigeria can sustain security improvements, bring new offshore projects online quickly and maintain investor confidence. With global energy markets already sensitive to instability in the Middle East and other producing regions, a significant increase in Nigerian supply could also strengthen the country\u2019s role in global oil markets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
