Timipre Sylva has resigned from Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress, saying the party has abandoned the principles on which it was founded as he faces separate allegations involving an anti-corruption investigation and an alleged plot against President Bola Tinubu’s government. Sylva, a former minister of state for petroleum resources, said his resignation took effect immediately after consultations with relatives, political associates and supporters.

In a letter dated Aug. 31 and addressed to the APC chairman in Ward 4 of Brass Local Government Area in Bayelsa State, Sylva said it was “deeply saddening” to see the party’s founding ideals altered beyond recognition. He also criticized the Tinubu administration and predicted Nigerians would seek political change in the 2027 general election. Sylva accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of acting like an arm of the ruling party, although he provided no evidence for that assertion.

Sylva’s departure comes while he remains the subject of significant legal scrutiny. The EFCC declared him wanted in November 2025 over an alleged conspiracy and dishonest conversion of about S14.86 million linked to funds intended for the Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical project. Separately, federal authorities have named him among defendants in a 13-count case arising from an alleged plot to overthrow Tinubu’s government. The accusations have not resulted in a conviction, and Sylva has denied involvement in the alleged coup plot.

Sylva has portrayed the cases against him as politically motivated. In his resignation statement, he said he understood that leaving the APC and criticizing government institutions could expose him and his associates to what he described as a renewed “witch hunt.” The EFCC, Nigeria’s main federal agency for investigating economic and financial crimes, has maintained that its cases are based on investigations and legal processes. Sylva is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty in court.

The former governor has been a major figure in Nigerian politics for nearly two decades. He governed Bayelsa, an oil-producing state in the Niger Delta, from 2007 to 2012 and later served as petroleum minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari. He was also among the politicians who helped build the APC before it defeated the Peoples Democratic Party in the historic 2015 presidential election. His political base in the Niger Delta gives his departure added significance because the region remains central to Nigeria’s oil and gas industry and to global energy markets.

Sylva has not announced which party, if any, he plans to join. His resignation comes as Nigeria’s political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections and as Tinubu’s government faces public debate over economic hardship, security and governance. The controversy surrounding allegations of a coup plot also carries wider regional significance because West Africa has experienced a series of military takeovers in recent years, making questions about democratic stability in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, closely watched across the continent and internationally.

ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Bayelsa State Gov.
