WASHINGTON \u2014<\/strong> The United States and Iran exchanged their most significant attacks in weeks Tuesday and early Wednesday, with American forces striking Iranian air defenses, radar installations and maritime facilities before Tehran fired ballistic missiles and drones toward U.S. positions and regional allies. U.S. Central Command said the operation targeted facilities linked to Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Jordan said its defenses confronted 13 incoming ballistic missiles, intercepting 10, while Bahrain reported destroying Iranian drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Donald Trump warned that Iran could face stronger military action if it continued retaliating. \u201cThey will be hit again at a much harder and higher level,\u201d Trump said. Iran, however, showed no sign of backing down. Its joint military command warned that countries assisting U.S. operations could face broader retaliation, while Iranian officials said American attacks had strengthened Tehran\u2019s determination to respond. The competing threats have renewed fears that a conflict that had slowed considerably since July could again spread across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian officials also accused the United States of causing civilian casualties. Authorities said an American strike hit a home hosting a wedding celebration near Kuhestak in southern Iran, killing five people, including a child, and wounding at least 68 others. U.S. Central Command said it was aware of reports of civilian casualties and maintained that American forces do not deliberately target civilians. Iranian officials separately reported seven deaths from strikes in Khuzestan province, allegations that could further intensify pressure for retaliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The renewed violence follows months of intermittent warfare that began Feb. 28 with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. Washington and Tehran reached an interim agreement in June calling for a ceasefire and negotiations, but the arrangement quickly unraveled amid disagreements over implementation. Before the latest attacks, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran remained willing to return to the agreement if Washington fulfilled its commitments, saying Iran would \u201cimmediately reciprocate.\u201d The latest exchange has made a quick diplomatic breakthrough increasingly difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the immediate military confrontation, the crisis is being closely watched because of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea. About one-fifth of the world\u2019s oil normally passes through the strait, making disruptions there capable of affecting fuel prices, inflation and transportation costs far beyond the Middle East. Oil markets reacted quickly to the latest fighting, with Brent crude climbing S4.16 Tuesday to settle at S94.65 a barrel and U.S. crude rising S4.46 to S90.22, both their highest closes in about five weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The escalation leaves regional governments facing renewed security risks while Washington and Tehran weigh how far they are prepared to take the confrontation. Iran has demonstrated that it retains the ability to launch missiles and drones toward American forces and neighboring states despite months of attacks on its military infrastructure, while the United States continues to maintain substantial air and naval power in the region.
