LONDON \u2014<\/strong> Former Senegal international Diomansy Kamara has called on European clubs to give African footballers greater respect and a stronger voice in transfer decisions after proposed moves involving Crystal Palace forward Ismaila Sarr and Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara failed to materialize before the summer transfer deadline. Kamara, who represents both Senegal internationals, said the episodes raised broader questions about whether players\u2019 ambitions are given enough weight when clubs negotiate their futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarr remained at Crystal Palace despite interest from Liverpool and Galatasaray in the closing stages of the transfer window. The 28-year-old Senegal forward had been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park, but Palace ultimately retained a player who was voted the club\u2019s men\u2019s player of the season for 2025-26. His situation became one of several high-profile deadline-day cases in which a player\u2019s reported preference for a move did not result in a transfer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Camara\u2019s case unfolded even later. Chelsea had reached a 47 million-pound agreement to sign the 22-year-old Monaco midfielder as the Premier League club sought a replacement for Enzo Fernandez, but Monaco withdrew from the proposed deal shortly before the deadline. The French club\u2019s decision was linked to uncertainty surrounding striker Folarin Balogun\u2019s proposed transfer to Everton. Balogun\u2019s move also eventually collapsed, leaving both Camara and Balogun at Monaco and Chelsea without the midfielder it had expected to sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kamara said the two cases should lead football officials to reconsider how African players are treated during transfer negotiations. \u201cOur African players deserve respect,\u201d he said in comments circulated Wednesday. Kamara argued that players should not be viewed simply as financial assets whose value and future are determined by negotiations between clubs. \u201cBehind every contract, there\u2019s a man, a career, dreams and life choices,\u201d he said, adding that footballers should be heard when decisions could determine the direction of their careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clubs have legitimate contractual and sporting interests when deciding whether to sell players who remain under contract, a reality Kamara himself acknowledged. His criticism, however, comes as international football is placing greater emphasis on player representation. FIFA and global players\u2019 union FIFPRO reached an agreement in June aimed at reforming aspects of the international transfer system and giving footballers a stronger role in decisions affecting their employment. The reforms include additional protections against abusive practices and a new platform through which players, clubs, leagues and governing bodies can discuss changes to football\u2019s labor rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The debate also reflects a longer-running discussion about the treatment of African footballers in an increasingly global transfer market. FIFPRO Africa and African Leagues signed a separate agreement in March establishing formal dialogue on contracts, working conditions and dispute resolution, while player unions have pushed for footballers to be treated as workers with enforceable employment rights rather than solely as sporting assets.
