The court also ordered the former Boston Celtics star to contribute S100,000 toward Santiago’s legal fees and another S10,000 for a forensic accountant, according to court documents reported Wednesday. The support order is temporary and can be modified as the case continues.

Santiago had sought S29,811 a month for their son, King Rafael Santiago Pierce, arguing that Pierce’s lengthy NBA career and other earnings showed he had the financial ability to pay that amount. She cited estimates that Pierce earned roughly S195 million to S203 million in NBA salary during his playing career. Pierce, however, asked that support be set closer to S4,145 a month, arguing that his present income is significantly lower than during his years as a professional basketball player.

The dispute began publicly after Santiago filed a paternity case in California in January and requested genetic testing. She later said she had tried to resolve the issue privately and described her legal action as being about “accountability and doing what’s right for my child.” Pierce subsequently acknowledged in court filings that he is King’s biological father and sought joint legal and physical custody, while Santiago has asked for sole custody.

Pierce has argued that his post-basketball finances should determine the level of support rather than the wealth he accumulated during his NBA career. Court filings reported by entertainment outlets showed average monthly income of about S128,000 in 2025 and roughly S165,000 during the first half of 2026, coming from television, commissions, royalties, YouTube and other business ventures. He has also said he faces substantial existing obligations, including support payments connected with other children.

The case involves one of the most recognizable players in modern NBA history. Pierce spent 19 seasons in the league, including 15 with Boston, won the 2008 NBA championship and was named Finals MVP. A 10-time All-Star who scored 26,397 career points, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021. His high-profile financial dispute highlights a recurring issue in family-law cases involving retired athletes and entertainers: courts generally focus on current financial circumstances and the child’s needs rather than simply relying on past career earnings.

The S8,508 monthly award does not necessarily bring the dispute to an end. Because the judge characterized the support order as temporary, the amount may be reconsidered as the court receives further financial evidence and addresses custody and other unresolved issues. Neither side’s broader custody position has been finally resolved, meaning the legal battle between Pierce and Santiago could continue even after the interim child-support decision.

LOS ANGELES — NBA Hall of Famer Paul Pierce has been ordered to pay S8,508 a month in temporary child support for his son with Princess Santiago, substantially less than the nearly S30,000 a month she had requested.
