Adenike was found critically injured inside the residence on Aug. 25, while her husband was later discovered after reportedly being struck by a vehicle in the Ifo area, according to community accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adejimi Olawumi, a former chairman of the local Community Development Association, said residents were alerted by cries for help during the night and found Adenike lying in a pool of blood. The couple\u2019s son, who was reportedly in another room, told residents he had not witnessed what happened between his parents. Olawumi said neighbors initially struggled to find transportation to take Adenike for medical treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When residents realized Odukoya was no longer at the house, community members began searching for him. They later learned that a man had been struck by a vehicle in the Ifo area and subsequently identified him as Odukoya. \u201cThe police took him to the hospital, and we confirmed that he was the one,\u201d Olawumi said. Odukoya\u2019s younger sister said they had sought help following an earlier dispute and that the matter had previously been resolved at a police station. Adenike was reportedly buried on the day of her death, while Odukoya was laid to rest on Sept. 2. The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation is underway. Deputy police spokesperson Opeyemi Oluborode said simply, \u201cThe police is investigating the incident.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deaths come amid continuing concern over intimate-partner and domestic violence in Nigeria. UN Women data based on Nigeria\u2019s 2018 Demographic and Health Survey shows that 22.3% of ever-partnered women ages 15 to 49 reported experiencing physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner at some point in their lives, while 13.8% reported such violence during the preceding 12 months. Nigeria adopted the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act in 2015 as part of efforts to strengthen legal protections against gender-based violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case has also drawn attention because Odukoya was a religious leader, highlighting the wider challenge faced by communities and faith institutions in recognizing and responding to domestic conflict before it escalates. Police have not announced criminal findings, and the allegations surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation.
