EBONYI, Nigeria \u2014 Ebonyi Gov. Francis Nwifuru has warned that local government chairmen who fail to secure victory for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2027 elections could be removed from office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nwifuru made the declaration in Abakaliki, the state capital, during the inauguration of newly elected chairpersons and vice-chairpersons for Ebonyi\u2019s 13 local government areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The governor\u2019s warning underscores the political importance of local government structures ahead of Nigeria\u2019s 2027 general elections, when voters are expected to elect a president, members of the National Assembly and state-level officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local government chairmen play a significant role in Nigeria\u2019s grassroots politics, where party organizations, community networks and elected officials often influence voter mobilization and campaign operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ebonyi, in southeastern Nigeria, has traditionally been associated with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. However, the APC has strengthened its position in the state in recent years, including Nwifuru\u2019s defection from the PDP to the APC in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2027 elections are expected to test the APC\u2019s ability to maintain and expand its political influence in Ebonyi, as parties position themselves for another nationwide electoral contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
