ABUJA, Nigeria \u2014<\/strong> Nigeria\u2019s federal government and the National Youth Service Corps are moving to more closely connect academic and national service records as authorities expand a digital verification system aimed at curbing forged certificates and preventing legitimate graduates from being blocked by errors in official databases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education Minister Tunji Alausa said the government is discussing an application programming interface, or API, that would allow the Ministry of Education and NYSC systems to exchange verified information more quickly. An API is technology that allows separate computer systems to securely communicate and share authorized data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed link would connect NYSC processes more closely with Nigeria\u2019s expanding digital education infrastructure, including the Nigerian Education Repository and Data Bank and the ministry\u2019s online credential-verification services. Alausa said the objective is to close weaknesses that allow fraudulent records into the system while reducing delays faced by genuine graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe digital transformation of Nigeria\u2019s education system is strengthening the integrity of academic qualifications,\u201d Alausa said during talks Tuesday with NYSC Director-General Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu in Abuja. He said the reforms are also intended to tackle certificate racketeering and protect legitimate students and graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government is also expanding the use of a permanent Learner Identification Number, designed to follow students through different stages of their education. More than 1.9 million candidates taking WAEC and NECO examinations had already received the identification numbers during the first phase of the program, according to federal authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials say one problem the project could address is inconsistent personal information across different government databases. Differences in names, graduation dates and other records can prevent graduates from registering for national service or obtaining employment even when their qualifications are genuine. The government says it plans to work with JAMB, the National Identity Management Commission and the National Board for Technical Education to standardize records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NYSC has already tightened its own verification rules. Prospective corps members in the 2026 Batch C registration period are required to obtain clearance through the national education records system before completing registration. The agency has warned applicants: \u201cNo NERD clearance, no NYSC registration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nafiu said the NYSC has pursued digitalization since 2014 and has introduced technologies aimed at protecting its documents from manipulation. He said QR codes used on NYSC documents have virtually eliminated document cloning and pledged continued cooperation with the Education Ministry on further verification reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest measures follow years of concern over fake academic and admission records in Nigeria. In 2025, former JAMB Registrar Is-haq Oloyede said about 15,000 candidates were suspected of forging admission letters in attempts to qualify for NYSC mobilization, highlighting weaknesses that authorities say better-linked databases could help expose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria created the NYSC in 1973, after the civil war, to promote national unity by requiring eligible graduates to serve for about a year, often outside their states of origin. Because NYSC documentation is commonly requested by employers and government institutions, fraudulent academic or service certificates can affect recruitment and confidence in public records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reforms also have an international dimension. Nigerian graduates routinely submit academic records for overseas study, immigration and employment, making reliable verification important beyond the country\u2019s borders. The Education Ministry has moved its authentication and evaluation service entirely online and requires academic transcripts used in some verification processes to be sent directly by awarding institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have not announced a completion date for the full NYSC-Ministry data connection. But officials say the broader aim is to build a system in which a student\u2019s verified identity and academic history can be traced from school through higher education, national service and eventually employment, reducing opportunities for forged credentials while making verification easier for legitimate graduates.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
