Efforts to bring Nigeria\u2019s opposition together behind a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election are facing fresh uncertainty, with Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Seyi Makinde showing little sign that they are ready to abandon their individual ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three politicians are among the most prominent opposition figures being discussed as possible challengers to President Bola Tinubu. Political groups pushing for a united opposition ticket argue that presenting several strong candidates could split the antigovernment vote and make it harder to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members of the G100, a coalition working to bring opposition leaders together, have continued consultations with political parties and presidential hopefuls. Umanu Elijah, a member of the group, said discussions were still underway. \u201cWe have not adopted a single candidate yet, but that is the goal,\u201d he said, adding that the group hopes to reach an understanding before the end of September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atiku, who served as Nigeria\u2019s vice president from 1999 to 2007 and has contested the presidency several times, has not indicated that he intends to withdraw. People close to him say he remains open to discussions with other opposition leaders but continues to believe he has the experience and political structure needed to compete nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter Obi has also maintained his political independence while supporting talks among opposition figures. Speaking during the opening of Seyi Makinde\u2019s campaign office in Abuja, Obi said political competition should not prevent leaders from working together in the national interest. \u201cWhoever wins, genuinely, from a free, fair and credible election, we all want to work together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials in Obi\u2019s political camp have also made clear that they consider him a strong candidate in any discussion about a possible consensus arrangement. His supporters frequently point to his performance in the 2023 presidential election, when he finished third after building a large following among younger Nigerians and urban voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, has also shown no willingness to step aside. Abubakar Yusuf, a spokesman for his political camp, said Makinde remained committed to the race. \u201cHe is in the race to win,\u201d Yusuf said, arguing that the governor should not automatically be expected to withdraw simply because more established presidential candidates are also seeking the opposition ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other opposition figures have questioned whether choosing a single candidate would solve the deeper problems facing Nigeria\u2019s fragmented opposition. African Action Congress leader Omoyele Sowore said cooperation must be based on policies and shared principles rather than political calculations. \u201cThe real question is: united around what?\u201d he said that warning against an alliance created only to defeat the governing party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The debate is shaped in part by the outcome of the 2023 presidential election. Tinubu won the presidency with about 36.6% of the vote, while Atiku and Obi together received significantly more votes than the eventual winner. Supporters of an opposition alliance argue that the result shows how a divided field can benefit the ruling party, although Nigeria\u2019s regional voting patterns and constitutional requirements make simple vote combinations difficult to predict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, Atiku, Obi and Makinde remain in the race, while discussions over a consensus candidate continue behind the scenes.
