Uganda\u2019s military chief has announced that the country will withdraw from the Invictus Games, saying participation could be interpreted as opposition to Britain\u2019s King Charles III and adding a political and royal dimension to an international sporting event created to support wounded military personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, chief of the Uganda People\u2019s Defence Force and son of President Yoweri Museveni, announced the decision Wednesday on X. \u201cUganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games,\u201d he wrote, adding: \u201cWe shall not participate in anything that does not have His Majesty\u2019s approval.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kainerugaba later made clear that his decision was connected to tensions surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex. Asked about his reasoning, he referred to what he called the \u201cHarry-Meghan nonsense\u201d within Uganda\u2019s Defence Ministry and added: \u201cI support the monarch. Period.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement came after Buckingham Palace reiterated that Harry and Meghan are no longer working members of the royal family and undertake their charitable and commercial activities privately. The couple stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020, setting off years of debate over their relationship with the monarchy and the extent to which their activities should be regarded as connected to the royal institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no indication, however, that King Charles has opposed the Invictus Games or instructed Uganda to withdraw. The king has previously supported initiatives for wounded service personnel, making Kainerugaba\u2019s interpretation of the situation distinct from any publicly stated position by the monarch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ugandan government spokesman Alan Kasujja said Kainerugaba has authority over whether the Uganda People\u2019s Defence Force takes part in the Games. He said the general\u2019s announcement represented his stated position and that any change would be communicated publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Invictus Games Foundation, meanwhile, said it had not received formal notification of Uganda\u2019s withdrawal and was seeking clarification from its contacts in the country. That leaves some uncertainty over the administrative status of Uganda\u2019s participation despite the military chief\u2019s public declaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reversal comes only months after Uganda joined the Invictus community as its 26th member nation and confirmed plans to make its Games debut at the 2027 competition in Birmingham, England. Uganda\u2019s entry had been presented as an opportunity to expand rehabilitation and sporting programs for wounded and injured members of its armed forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time Uganda joined, Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka described participation as an opportunity for military personnel to benefit from sport as part of rehabilitation, recovery, resilience and reintegration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prince Harry founded the Invictus Games in 2014 after being inspired by the U.S. Warrior Games and by his own military experience. The first competition was held in London and brought together wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans from several countries. The event has since developed into an international adaptive sports competition focused on rehabilitation and recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uganda\u2019s abrupt change of course now raises questions about whether its veterans will continue to benefit from programs established through the Invictus partnership and whether the withdrawal will ultimately become formal.
