Nigeria\u2019s inspector general of police, Olatunji Disu, has urged Nigerians to exercise restraint when filming police officers, saying the growing use of mobile phones to record personnel has become demoralising and, in some cases, turns officers into material for social media entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Disu made the comments during a meeting with Nigerian Bar Association President Oyinkansola Badejo Okusanya and members of the association\u2019s executive committee at police headquarters in Abuja. The meeting focused on improving relations between lawyers and the police and reducing confrontations between the two professions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the video, Disu acknowledged that Nigerians have a right to record police officers performing public duties but argued that the right should be exercised responsibly. He said some officers felt unsettled after a recent court judgment affirmed the public\u2019s right to film police activity, describing indiscriminate recording as \u201cvery, very demoralising.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police chief said his concern was particularly directed at people who record officers simply to create social media content. He pointed to officers stationed at checkpoints, highways and isolated areas, saying many work under difficult and potentially dangerous conditions and should not automatically become subjects of ridicule or entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
