Ireland was partitioned in 1921, creating Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom while the rest of the island became the Irish Free State, later the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland\u2019s constitutional status has remained a major source of political division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"640\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 360 \/ 640;\" width=\"360\" controls src=\"https:\/\/www.funminews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/WhatsApp-Video-2026-09-12-at-6.36.17-AM.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue was at the center of decades of conflict known as the Troubles, which largely ended with the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. The agreement established that Northern Ireland will remain part of the United Kingdom unless a majority of people in Northern Ireland vote for reunification with the Republic of Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the agreement, any decision on Northern Ireland\u2019s constitutional future must therefore be determined through democratic consent.
