ABUJA, Nigeria \u2014<\/strong> Nigerian security agencies have stepped up protection around schools, places of worship and National Youth Service Corps orientation camps after intelligence indicated that terrorist groups may be preparing coordinated attacks as students return for the 2026-27 academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nigeria Police Force directed commands nationwide to intensify surveillance, patrols, stop-and-search operations, access controls and rapid-response arrangements around vulnerable locations. The directive was contained in a Sept. 13 message from the Force Department of Operations in Abuja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A separate Nigerian Army intelligence communication dated Sept. 9 warned of increased mobilization of fighters and resources by terrorist groups, according to The Guardian. The intelligence identified areas of concern across the Northeast, Northwest, North-Central and Southwest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warning does not mean an attack is certain, and authorities have not publicly identified a specific timetable or single target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security agencies said intelligence had tracked armed fighters moving from Katsina through Kaduna toward Plateau state. Suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province, or ISWAP, were also reported to be conducting surveillance of possible targets with assistance from local collaborators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timing has raised particular concern because millions of children are returning to classrooms for the new academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police commanders were instructed to strengthen security at state borders, major entry and exit routes and other locations that armed groups could use to move fighters or weapons. Specialized units, including counterterrorism and bomb-disposal teams, were also placed on heightened alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Department of State Services source told The Guardian that publicly acknowledging security intelligence can itself be part of a prevention strategy because it signals to attackers that authorities are aware of their plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria’s army chief, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, meanwhile, said the military was expanding formations and units to increase its presence in vulnerable areas and improve its ability to respond to security threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Youth Service Corps sends Nigerian graduates around the country for a year of national service intended to promote national unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants begin their service with a compulsory three-week orientation program, bringing large numbers of young graduates together at camps across Nigeria. The scheme was established in 1973, following the Nigerian Civil War, as part of an effort to strengthen ties among young Nigerians from different ethnic and regional backgrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That concentration of young people makes security at the camps particularly important when authorities receive warnings involving potential attacks on crowded public facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest alert comes against the backdrop of more than a decade of attacks and mass kidnappings targeting Nigerian schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most internationally recognized case occurred in April 2014, when Boko Haram fighters abducted 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in northeastern Borno state. The kidnapping triggered the global Bring Back Our Girls campaign and focused international attention on the vulnerability of Nigerian students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria has since experienced repeated mass school abductions involving armed groups and criminal gangs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reuters reported that major incidents have included the kidnapping of 279 girls in Zamfara state in 2021 and the abduction of more than 200 children from a Baptist school in Kaduna that same year. New large-scale kidnappings were also reported in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Premium Times reported this week that more than 2,000 students have been kidnapped in about 30 school attacks since 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The motives and perpetrators have varied. Boko Haram and ISWAP have carried out ideological insurgencies, particularly in northeastern Nigeria, while other heavily armed groups commonly described as bandits have kidnapped civilians for ransom in northern and central parts of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba organization, called on governors in southwestern Nigeria to strengthen regional security measures following kidnappings and armed attacks in parts of the region. Its national publicity secretary, Jare Ajayi, cited incidents in Ondo, Kwara, Kogi and along the Igbeti-Igboho road as reasons for increased vigilance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warning comes only weeks after pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo state were released, underscoring concerns that mass kidnapping is no longer confined to areas traditionally associated with Nigeria’s insurgencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For parents and students, the new security alert is likely to revive memories of previous school attacks. Authorities have urged heightened vigilance but have not announced a nationwide closure of schools or NYSC orientation camps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Militant organizations linked to Islamic State and al-Qaida have expanded or maintained operations across parts of West Africa and the Sahel, where countries including Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso continue to face persistent extremist violence. Recent conflict data indicate militant activity across the region remains at historically high levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, is therefore central to regional efforts to prevent extremist organizations and criminal networks from expanding across borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police and military authorities say intelligence gathering, patrols and rapid-response deployments are being strengthened around potential targets.
