Gen. Turki al-Malki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led military coalition fighting the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen. Saudi authorities briefly activated security alerts in Mecca and other cities, including Jeddah and Taif.

Al-Malki described the security of Mecca and its holy sites as a “red line” and said Saudi forces would continue protecting worshippers and the kingdom’s territory. Saudi authorities did not report casualties or damage from the intercepted drone.

The Houthis denied that they had targeted Mecca. Houthi political bureau member Mohammed al-Farah called the Saudi allegation “an outright lie,” while a Houthi military source said the group posed no threat to Mecca or other Islamic holy sites.

Mecca is home to the Grand Mosque and the Kaaba, toward which Muslims around the world face during daily prayers. Millions of Muslims travel to the city each year for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.

Saudi government figures show that more than 1.7 million people performed Hajj in May 2026, including about 1.55 million pilgrims who traveled from outside the kingdom.

The latest incident therefore carries significance well beyond Saudi Arabia. Any perceived threat to Mecca is likely to draw attention across the Muslim world because of the city’s central religious importance.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation said Wednesday that it condemned Houthi attacks involving Mecca and the Madinah region. Kuwait, Qatar, Egypt and the Muslim World League had also condemned recent Houthi attacks on civilian areas in Saudi Arabia, while Qatar warned that instability affecting major regional shipping routes could have serious global consequences.

Saudi authorities said Tuesday’s incident was the second known Houthi attempt involving Mecca after a ballistic missile launch in July 2017. The Houthis disputed Saudi allegations surrounding threats to the holy city at the time as well.

The wider conflict began after the Houthis seized Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, in 2014. Saudi Arabia intervened militarily the following year at the head of a coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

Years of airstrikes, ground combat, hunger and disease turned Yemen into one of the world’s gravest humanitarian crises. A U.N.-brokered truce in 2022 sharply reduced major fighting, although attempts to turn that pause into a permanent peace agreement stalled.

The conflict has intensified again in recent weeks. Houthi forces have expanded their control along Yemen’s Red Sea coast near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s most important maritime passages.

The renewed fighting is also forcing civilians from their homes.

The U.N. refugee agency said more than 100,000 people had been internally displaced by the latest violence, while thousands more had fled Yemen by sea for Djibouti.

Tawfiq al-Kharij, one of those displaced, described how abruptly the fighting returned.

“We were living peacefully … then the war came suddenly,” he told Reuters.

The comments illustrate the human cost behind a confrontation increasingly dominated by drones, missiles and disputes over strategic waterways.

The escalation matters internationally because two crucial energy routes are caught up in the wider confrontation.

The Houthis’ growing presence near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could threaten shipping between the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. At the same time, disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have already forced Saudi Arabia to rely more heavily on alternative export routes.

Saudi Arabia has also blamed a separate Iran-aligned group based in Iraq for an attack that shut its East-West Pipeline, which carries oil from fields near the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea. Traders have warned that an extended disruption could affect supplies equivalent to as much as 4% of global oil output.

Oil prices have remained sensitive to the conflict, highlighting how fighting in Yemen and attacks inside Saudi Arabia can affect consumers and businesses far beyond the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia says it will continue defending its territory and holy sites, while the Houthis continue to dispute allegations that they targeted Mecca. The incident adds another potentially volatile element to a regional conflict already affecting civilians, religious travel, global shipping and energy markets.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Saudi Arabia said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels south of Mecca before it could enter restricted airspace over Islam’s holiest city, an incident that comes amid a sharp escalation in fighting across Yemen and growing threats to regional shipping and energy supplies.
