PLYMOUTH, Massachusetts \u2014 Lindsay Clancy could wait months before learning whether she will face another murder trial after her first case ended with a deadlocked jury, leaving one of Massachusetts\u2019 most closely watched criminal cases unresolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clancy, 36, returned to Plymouth Superior Court following the September 4 mistrial in the deaths of her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judge William Sullivan declined to immediately set a new trial date and scheduled another hearing for November 2. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington told the court he would not be prepared for another trial before June 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clancy is charged with first degree murder in connection with the January 24, 2023 deaths at the family\u2019s home in Duxbury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her first trial centered largely on whether she was criminally responsible for the killings. The defense argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and could not legally be held responsible for her actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prosecutors rejected that argument and maintained that her actions showed planning and awareness of what she was doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jury ultimately failed to reach a unanimous verdict. Eleven jurors supported a finding of not guilty by reason of insanity, while one juror disagreed, resulting in the mistrial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the latest hearing, Clancy\u2019s lawyers asked the judge to enter a finding of not guilty and argued that prosecutors had failed to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutors responded that sufficient evidence had been presented and said the case should remain before the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judge did not immediately rule on the request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some maternal mental health advocates and members of the public have expressed sympathy for Clancy, saying the case has exposed the potentially devastating consequences of severe postpartum psychiatric illness. Others have focused on the three children who died and argued that their deaths and the issue of accountability must remain central to the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lone juror who prevented a unanimous insanity verdict later said attention should remain on Cora, Dawson and Callan, reflecting the difficult emotions surrounding a case that has divided observers from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The killings occurred on January 24, 2023, after Clancy\u2019s husband, Patrick Clancy, briefly left the family home. Authorities later found the three children critically injured inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clancy also suffered serious injuries after jumping from an upstairs window in what authorities described as a suicide attempt. She survived but was left paralyzed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jurors at her first trial heard extensive testimony from medical professionals, investigators, relatives and psychiatric experts about her mental health before the deaths. In 2001, Yates drowned her five children after a documented history of severe postpartum depression and psychosis. If prosecutors pursue another trial and the judge allows the case to move forward, it may not begin until at least June 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
