ABUJA, Nigeria. The Nigeria Labour Congress has called for an immediate reduction in petrol prices, a nationwide wage award and fresh negotiations on the national minimum wage as Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, arguing that millions of workers can no longer keep pace with the rising cost of everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its Independence Day message signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the labour centre said the current 70,000 naira monthly minimum wage has lost much of its purchasing power. The union wants the federal government to establish a tripartite committee, bringing together government, labour and employers, to negotiate a new wage standard for 2027 before the end of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Petrol prices are at the centre of labour\u2019s argument. The NLC said petrol is selling for about 1,430 naira per litre or more in major cities, with higher prices reported in some remote areas. It said expensive fuel is feeding directly into transport fares, food prices, rent, school expenses and the cost of running small businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For ordinary workers, those pressures are visible in daily journeys. Sunny Peter, a commercial driver in Abuja\u2019s Dei Dei area, said the fare from Dei Dei to Berger had risen from roughly 900 to 1,000 naira to between 1,200 and 1,500 naira. He said drivers were also struggling with higher fuel and vehicle maintenance costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adaeze Okoli, a civil servant living in Kubwa, said a growing share of her salary now goes toward transportation, leaving less for food, rent and other household needs. Another resident, Esther Okeke, a mother of six in Dutse, said increases in food, electricity, school and transportation expenses had made managing the family budget increasingly difficult. Their experiences reflect the pressures that labour leaders say are driving the latest demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NLC is also seeking an emergency wage award for workers at federal, state and local government levels. It says such a payment would provide temporary relief while negotiations for a new minimum wage proceed. Labour has also renewed calls for tax relief measures that formed part of agreements reached with the government after the removal of the petrol subsidy in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current minimum wage was approved at 70,000 naira in July 2024 after months of negotiations between the Tinubu administration and organised labour. At the time, President Bola Tinubu agreed that the wage should be reviewed after three years rather than the previous five year cycle. Labour now argues that economic conditions have changed quickly enough to justify beginning another review earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Official inflation figures show that prices are still rising, although at a slower rate than a year earlier. Headline inflation was reported at 15.39 percent in August 2026, while food inflation stood at 19.57 percent. Those figures measure the pace of price increases across the economy and do not mean that prices themselves have returned to earlier levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tinubu used his Independence Day address to acknowledge the strain on households while defending the direction of his economic programme. He said reducing the cost of living is now a government priority, with plans focused on lowering the cost of producing and transporting food and other goods, expanding farming and improving roads, railways and ports. He also ruled out reversing the removal of the petrol subsidy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pressure from workers may intensify quickly. The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, which represents public sector unions, has threatened a three day warning strike over fuel prices and wages. The council has separately pushed for petrol to fall to around 500 naira per litre and has called for a much larger wage increase, although any new national minimum wage would still have to go through formal negotiations among labour, employers and government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria\u2019s 66th Independence anniversary therefore arrives with two sharply different messages about the economy. The government says painful reforms have created the foundation for stronger growth and lower living costs. Labour says workers need relief they can feel now, in their salaries, transport fares, food bills and household budgets.
