The LPDC had suspended Gadzama in July after finding him liable for professional misconduct under provisions of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners. Another lawyer, Ocha Ulegede, received a two year suspension arising from the same dispute. The committee directed that senior courts, legal authorities and other relevant institutions be notified of its decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The disciplinary case grew out of a complicated dispute involving compensation for victims and survivors of the 2001 military operation in Zaki Biam, Benue State. A Federal High Court awarded affected families and other claimants 41.8 billion naira in damages in 2007. Its central effect is to prevent the LPDC sanction from being treated as an enforceable final disciplinary determination in the circumstances identified by the court. The judgment could have wider consequences for Nigeria\u2019s lawyer discipline system if authorities are required to establish a functioning appeal mechanism before similar sanctions can be enforced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As of the latest reports, no detailed public response from the LPDC or the Body of Benchers to the Federal High Court judgment had been reported.
