Taiwan received its first two newly built F-16V Block 70 fighter jets from the United States on Friday, October 2, marking the beginning of a long delayed delivery program aimed at strengthening the island’s air defenses.

The aircraft landed at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung on Taiwan’s eastern coast after traveling through Hawaii and Guam. They are the first of 66 new F-16Vs ordered under an $8 billion deal approved by Washington in 2019.

Taiwanese Defense Minister Wellington Koo said more aircraft are expected before the end of the year, although he did not provide a detailed delivery schedule. The program has faced delays linked partly to software and production issues.

The arrival is significant for Taiwan’s air force, which regularly deploys aircraft in response to Chinese military activity around the island. Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has repeatedly criticized U.S. weapons sales to Taipei. Taiwan’s government rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claim.

Once all 66 aircraft are delivered, Taiwan’s F-16 fleet is expected to exceed 200 jets. The island has also upgraded many of its older F-16A/B aircraft to the F-16V standard, giving them improved radar, avionics and combat systems.

The newly built Block 70 aircraft are among the most advanced versions of the F-16. They are designed with updated electronic systems and active electronically scanned array radar intended to improve detection and targeting capabilities.

For Taiwan, the delivery comes after years of concern over a backlog of U.S. weapons orders. Officials in Taipei have repeatedly pressed Washington and defense manufacturers to accelerate production as China expands military exercises and patrols near the island.

Lockheed Martin, which manufactures the aircraft, has previously said it is working with the U.S. government to accelerate deliveries and support Taiwan’s security requirements.

The timing is also politically sensitive, with relations between Washington and Beijing still shaped by disagreements over Taiwan, trade and regional security.

Washington does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan but remains its most important arms supplier. Under U.S. law, the United States provides Taiwan with defensive equipment while maintaining strategic ambiguity over how it would respond to a conflict involving the island.

China has consistently urged Washington to stop selling weapons to Taiwan, arguing that such deals interfere in what Beijing considers an internal matter. Taiwan says its military purchases are necessary because of the scale and frequency of Chinese military activity around the island.

For people in Taiwan, the arrival of the jets is likely to feed a broader debate over how the island should strengthen its defenses while avoiding further escalation with Beijing.

The delivery is also historically significant. These are among the first newly purchased fighter jets to arrive in Taiwan in decades, adding a new generation of combat aircraft to an air force facing increasing operational demands.

More F-16Vs are expected to arrive as production continues in the United States, making the program one of the most closely watched parts of Taiwan’s military modernization.
