The action covers workers in federal, state and local government services, including employees of ministries, departments and agencies. Punch Newspapers

The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council directed its affiliates across the country to participate from October 2 to October 4. The council, which represents eight public sector unions, said workers and their dependants were struggling with transport costs, food prices and other basic household expenses. Punch Newspapers

At the centre of the dispute is the price of petrol. The council is demanding a reduction to ₦500 a litre, an immediate wage award and the start of negotiations for a new national minimum wage. Labour leaders argue that higher fuel and transport costs have steadily reduced the value of workers’ salaries. Premium Times Nigeria

For many public servants, the pressure is felt long before they reach their offices. Transport to work takes a larger share of monthly pay, while higher distribution costs feed into the price of food and other goods. Families are also balancing rent, school expenses, medical bills and electricity costs against salaries that unions say no longer stretch as far as they once did.

The council has also called for preparations to begin early for the next minimum wage review, expected in 2027. Union leaders say negotiations should start before the current wage structure expires so workers are not left waiting while living costs continue to rise. Punch Newspapers

The strike followed a September 21 letter to President Bola Tinubu and an ultimatum that expired at the end of September. Labour leaders had urged the government to address their concerns during Tinubu’s October 1 Independence Day address. When the speech did not announce the petrol price reduction or wage award sought by the unions, the council proceeded with the warning strike. Punch Newspapers

Tinubu acknowledged in his Independence Day address that many Nigerians continue to struggle with the cost of food, transportation, education and other basic needs. He said reducing the cost of living was a priority and pointed to increased agricultural production, infrastructure investment and cheaper transport as parts of the government’s strategy. He also defended the economic reforms introduced since 2023 as necessary to address longstanding weaknesses in the economy. State House

The government has promoted compressed natural gas, or CNG, as a cheaper alternative to petrol for public transport. Officials say the number of CNG stations and converted vehicles has increased, while Tinubu has ruled out a return to the former petrol subsidy system. The administration argues that money previously spent subsidising fuel can instead support infrastructure and public services. Channels Television

The subsidy was removed shortly after Tinubu took office in May 2023, triggering a sharp increase in fuel and transport costs. Since then, the government has defended the policy as part of a wider economic restructuring, while workers and households have continued to complain that improvements in national economic indicators have not translated quickly enough into relief in everyday life. State House

The strike could disrupt government offices and public services if participation is widespread across federal, state and local institutions. Because unions representing health workers and other public employees are involved, the effect on individual services will depend on participation levels during the three day action. Punch Newspapers

For the workers taking part, the dispute is ultimately about how far a monthly salary can still go. Petrol prices, transport fares and household expenses have turned national economic policy into a daily calculation over commuting, food, school costs and healthcare.

For many public servants, the argument is less about economic figures than whether their pay can still cover the journey to work and the basic needs waiting for them at home.

Public servants across Nigeria began a three day warning strike on October 2 after unions said the federal government had failed to adequately address demands over rising fuel prices, wages and the cost of living.
