The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Chima Ofoeke over the alleged killing of his former girlfriend, Mmesoma Umeorini, whose remains were reportedly discovered concealed inside a sack. The incident occurred in connection with the young woman’s disappearance from Uga community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. Police confirmed the arrest on Saturday, October 24, following a missing person report submitted by the victim’s mother. The suspect allegedly admitted during preliminary questioning that he killed Umeorini after their romantic relationship ended. The development has raised concerns about violence in intimate relationships, the safety of women and the importance of timely investigations into missing persons.
According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, the investigation began after Umeorini’s mother approached the Divisional Police Officer in Umuchu to report that her daughter had been missing since October 16. The mother explained that attempts to establish her whereabouts had been unsuccessful, prompting police intervention. Officers subsequently began gathering information about the young woman’s recent movements, personal contacts and possible circumstances surrounding her disappearance. The investigation eventually focused on Ofoeke, identified as her former boyfriend and an indigene of Ebonyi State who was living in Uga. The police did not disclose the precise date of his arrest or provide a complete account of the initial investigative steps.
Investigators worked with local security personnel to trace the suspect following the report of Umeorini’s disappearance.
Ikenga explained that officers collaborated with members of the Agunechemba security outfit operating in Uga to locate and apprehend the suspect. The joint operation followed intelligence obtained during the investigation, which reportedly connected Ofoeke to the missing woman. Security personnel subsequently arrested him and handed him over for questioning. Police said the cooperation between law enforcement officers and local security volunteers contributed to the breakthrough. The operation also demonstrated the potential importance of community information in tracing missing individuals, particularly where relatives and neighbours can provide details about recent movements, relationships and suspicious circumstances requiring further examination.
During preliminary interrogation, Ofoeke allegedly told investigators that he killed Umeorini because she had ended their romantic relationship. Police said the suspect subsequently led detectives to the location where her remains were recovered. Reports identified the victim as a 23 year old woman whose disappearance had caused concern among relatives. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding her death, including when the alleged killing occurred and how her remains were transported and concealed. Although the reported admission is significant to the investigation, it does not establish criminal guilt. Any statement attributed to the suspect must be considered alongside independently obtained evidence and the requirements governing admissibility in criminal proceedings.

A video circulated online following the arrest, reportedly showing security personnel questioning Ofoeke while he stood near a sack said to contain the victim’s remains. In the recording described by news organisations, the suspect allegedly admitted that he strangled Umeorini after she decided to end their relationship. Some comments made by people present during the interrogation raised further speculation about the condition of the remains. However, police have not publicly confirmed claims that the body was dismembered, and such allegations should not be treated as established facts without forensic findings. The circumstances surrounding the recording and the suspect’s statements will also require proper examination during the criminal investigation.
The discovery has drawn attention to the grief experienced by the deceased woman’s family, particularly her mother, whose missing person report initiated the police response. The family had reportedly been searching for Umeorini before officers located the suspect and recovered her remains. The case illustrates the importance of taking disappearance reports seriously, especially where individuals may be exposed to threats or violence following relationship disputes. While the police have disclosed some information about the investigation, they have not released a detailed account of the family’s response or confirmed funeral arrangements. Authorities are expected to continue their inquiries while ensuring that relevant evidence is preserved and the rights of those involved are respected.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further investigation.
Following the arrest, Anambra State Commissioner of Police Nnanna Ama ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka. The directive is intended to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the suspected killing, the circumstances surrounding the recovery of the body and the evidence linking the suspect to the alleged offence. Detectives are expected to examine relevant witness statements, physical evidence and any forensic findings that may help establish the sequence of events. The commissioner also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and urged residents to report missing persons and suspicious activities promptly. The police said further information would be released as the investigation progresses.
The incident comes amid continuing concerns about violence against women and the handling of disputes involving intimate partners in Nigeria. A relevant earlier case occurred in September 2026, when police in Enugu State arrested a man over the suspected killing of his girlfriend following an argument in their apartment. Investigators in that case alleged that the suspect concealed the woman’s remains after the incident. Although the two cases involve separate circumstances and suspects, they have brought renewed attention to the risks associated with escalating interpersonal conflicts. Advocates for women’s safety have consistently called for better access to protective services, stronger investigations into reported threats and greater public awareness of available support for individuals experiencing violence or intimidation.
Criminal investigations require the careful examination of evidence, witness accounts and forensic findings before charges can be established.
The alleged killing also raises important questions about criminal justice procedures and the prosecution of violent offences. Under Nigerian law, homicide investigations require authorities to establish the cause of death, the circumstances surrounding the incident and the criminal responsibility of any person charged. A confession may form part of the prosecution’s evidence, but its admissibility and reliability must be assessed according to the law. Investigators must also ensure that statements are properly obtained and supported by relevant evidence. Ofoeke remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless a competent court finds him guilty. The investigation will therefore need to move beyond the reported admission and establish the facts necessary for any criminal proceedings.
As of October 27, 2026, the Anambra State Police Command has confirmed Ofoeke’s arrest and the recovery of Umeorini’s remains, while the State Criminal Investigation Department continues examining the case. No final court judgment has been announced, and police have not confirmed that the suspect has been formally arraigned. The authorities have appealed for public cooperation as investigators work to establish the full circumstances of the young woman’s death. For the deceased’s family, the investigation represents an important step towards obtaining answers and seeking justice. The case has also reinforced the need for timely missing person investigations, effective responses to threats within relationships and stronger measures to prevent violence against women and girls.
