At least 18 people have been killed in Niger State, Nigeria, in a violent escalation of a land dispute that has shaken two rural communities. Fifteen victims were trapped inside a two-bedroom home that was set ablaze by unidentified attackers, while three others were shot dead in separate incidents.
The attack unfolded late at night in Mararraban Gwadaro and Tashan Bako, villages in Rafi Local Government Area, where tensions over farmland have been simmering for weeks. Witnesses said the assailants stormed the house, locked the occupants inside, and set it on fire, leaving no chance of escape.
Local sources reported that the violence began on June 29 around 11:30 p.m. in Godoro village, when gunmen shot and killed a 25-year-old man, Ibrahim Musa. His death sparked a cycle of reprisal attacks that spread across neighboring communities, intensifying the dispute.
Residents described scenes of panic as families fled their homes, fearing further assaults. Survivors said the attackers moved quickly, targeting households linked to the conflict. Many villagers have since abandoned their homes, adding to the growing humanitarian crisis.
