Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has explained that his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition does not amount to anti-party activity against the LP. Obi stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, where he emphasized his commitment to working with the coalition to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

According to Obi, his decision to join the coalition was driven by a desire to tap into the experience of both successful and failed individuals, with the ultimate goal of transforming Nigeria into a better nation. He believes that the current administration’s economic mismanagement has led to soaring poverty rates and high unemployment, and that a united front is necessary to tackle these challenges.

Obi’s move has sparked reactions within the LP, with the Julius Abure-led faction asking him to resign from the party within 48 hours. However, the Nenadi Usman-led faction of the party has backed Obi’s decision. Despite this, Obi remains committed to the LP, stating, “Today, I am a Labour Party member. I remain in the Labour Party.”

The ADC coalition, which has adopted Peter Obi as a key figure, aims to challenge President Tinubu in the 2027 general election. Obi has expressed confidence that the coalition will offer Nigerians a new kind of leadership, one that is competent, capable, and compassionate. He emphasized that the decision to join the coalition was not taken lightly, but rather after deep reflection on Nigeria’s situation and a desire to prioritize Nigerians’ welfare.

As the 2027 election approaches, Obi’s role in the coalition is likely to be crucial. Some sources suggest that Obi may emerge as the coalition’s candidate, with former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido expressing his willingness to support Obi if he becomes the standard bearer of the coalition.
