A heated showdown is brewing between the Senate and the House of Representatives over the proposed return of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a former governorship aspirant in Kogi State, as a Commissioner in the National Assembly Service Commission (NASS). The Senate has drawn battle lines, with lawmakers expressing strong opposition to her return.
The controversy surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s potential return stems from her previous resignation from the Senate in 2020, which was reportedly due to a plea bargain arrangement with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The Senate is concerned that her return would be a breach of the agreement and undermine the integrity of the NASS.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North senatorial district, expressed his opposition to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return, stating that it would be a slap in the face of Nigerians who expect public officials to uphold the law. He emphasized that if Akpoti-Uduaghan was able to secure a plea bargain arrangement, she should not be considered for a position in the NASS.
The Senate’s stance on the matter has sparked a debate about the integrity of public officials and the need for accountability in governance. The showdown between the Senate and the House of Representatives highlights the differing views on Akpoti-Uduaghan’s eligibility for the position.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return will be approved or rejected. However, one thing is clear: the Senate is determined to draw a line in the sand and uphold the integrity of the NASS.
