Dr. Ibrahim Bello, the 16th Emir of Gusau in Zamfara State, has passed away at age 71 in Abuja on Friday after a prolonged illness, officials confirmed. The royal father had been receiving treatment for some time and ultimately succumbed in a medical facility outside the state capital.
Appointed Emir on March 16, 2015, following the demise of his father, Dr. Bello served in the esteemed traditional position for over a decade. Prior to ascending the throne, his career in public service peaked as Permanent Secretary in both the Sokoto and Zamfara State civil services, where he earned widespread respect for his dedication and integrity.
Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State officially announced the Emir’s passing through his spokesman, Sulaiman Idis, describing the news as deeply saddening. The governor extended heartfelt condolences to the Emir’s immediate and extended families, the Gusau Emirate, the Council of Chiefs, and the people of Zamfara, emphasizing the late monarch’s unwavering commitment to faith, leadership, and public service.
Governor Lawal further remarked that the Emir’s death represented a significant loss not only to Zamfara State but to Northern Nigeria and the nation at large. He described Dr. Bello as a mentor and trusted adviser, acknowledging that the Emir’s wisdom shaped state leadership over the past decade. He prayed for divine forgiveness for the departed soul and comfort for those he leaves behind.
Funeral arrangements are expected to follow Islamic rites, with details to be confirmed. As Zamfara mourns the loss of a beloved traditional leader, the state looks ahead to a period of reflection and transition within the Gusau Emirate as it prepares to appoint a successor.
