In a bid to boost tourism and enhance socio-economic mobility, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has taken delivery of two new Bombardier CRJ1000 aircraft. The regional jets, designed to carry up to 100 passengers, will significantly improve air travel to and from Calabar, the state capital. The acquisition is part of the state government’s efforts to revitalize aviation infrastructure and promote economic growth.
The historic reception of the airliners took place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, marking a major milestone in the state’s aviation development. Governor Otu described the acquisition as a “long-overdue leap into the future of seamless connectivity and economic transformation” for Cross River State. He emphasized that reliable air transportation is pivotal to the success of the state’s tourism-driven economic blueprint, citing Carnival Calabar, Obudu Ranch Resort, and ecotourism assets as key attractions that require improved accessibility.
The new aircraft will be operated by Valuejet Airline, pending the state government’s acquisition of an Air Operational Certification to operate as an independent airline. According to the Commissioner for Aviation, Captain Imah Eno Utum, the acquisition brings the number of aircraft owned by the state government to four. The two Boeing 747 aircraft previously acquired by the immediate-past government are being operated by Aero Contractors. Governor Otu assured that the initiative is just the beginning of the state’s “People First” agenda, aimed at promoting economic growth and development.
The acquisition has been hailed as a “game-changing intervention” by former Minister Edem Duke, who described it as a testament to Governor Otu’s visionary leadership. Duke noted that the move would dramatically alter the perception of Calabar as a difficult destination, opening up new opportunities in hospitality, conferences, agriculture, and export. The official commissioning of the new aircraft by the Ministry of Aviation is scheduled for August 12, 2025.
Governor Otu emphasized that the aircraft are not just machines, but catalysts of commerce, bridges of culture, and vessels of hope. He noted that the initiative would boost investor confidence and attract business interests into the state, saying, “No economy thrives in isolation. Investors want assurance of smooth logistics. These aircraft will ensure Cross River is no longer at the periphery of economic conversations.” With the new aircraft, Cross River State is poised to take a giant leap in aviation and economic development, positioning itself as a major player in the region.
