Germany has launched four new Schengen visa application centres in Nigeria, Cameroon, and Cyprus, aiming to reduce processing delays and increase accessibility for prospective travellers. The centres, located in Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria, Yaoundé, Cameroon, and Nicosia, Cyprus, are part of a seven-year partnership between Germany’s Federal Foreign Office and VFS Global, a global visa outsourcing firm.

The new centres will handle key front-end processes, including document collection, biometric enrolment, and appointment scheduling, alleviating the burden on embassies and consulates. This move is expected to improve the overall efficiency and transparency of the visa application process. According to a German Foreign Office spokesperson, “This new collaboration with VFS Global enables us to improve accessibility and reduce the burden on applicants.” VFS Global will also introduce digital tools to enhance the application experience, providing a secure, standardised, and user-friendly platform for applicants.

The launch of these centres comes amid concerns over high Schengen visa rejection rates for African applicants. Nigeria, in particular, recorded a rejection rate of 45.9% in 2024, one of the highest globally. Dr. Anika Sorensen, a migration policy analyst, notes that “there’s a clear disparity in the way applications from Africa are treated compared to those from other regions.” The German government’s expansion of visa centres is seen as a step towards addressing this disparity.

The new visa centres are expected to serve tens of thousands of applicants annually, providing a more streamlined and accessible application process. Applicants can now book appointments via the VFS Global website, selecting their preferred location and tracking their application status online. This development is likely to benefit individuals seeking to travel to Germany for education, healthcare, tourism, or professional opportunities.

The German government views this expansion as part of a broader strategy to enhance international engagement and facilitate people-to-people exchanges. By fostering mobility, Germany aims to strengthen economic, academic, and cultural ties with other nations. The new visa centres are set to begin full operations later this month, marking a significant step towards improving the visa application experience for African and Middle Eastern travellers.
