The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 93 suspected internet fraudsters in Ogun State, Nigeria. The arrests were made during a sting operation in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Sunday, August 10, 2025. According to the EFCC, the operation was conducted based on credible intelligence linking the suspects to internet crimes.
During the operation, EFCC operatives recovered 18 vehicles and mobile devices from the suspects. The agency stated that the suspects will be charged in court as soon as investigations are concluded. This recent arrest brings to mind the agency’s commitment to tackling cybercrime and internet fraud in the country.
However, the operation has sparked controversy, with the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) accusing the EFCC of invading its premises in a “Gestapo-like manner”. The library claimed that the EFCC operatives arrived at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, causing panic and chaos, and injuring several people. The OOPL has demanded an apology and explanation from the EFCC for the alleged invasion.
The EFCC’s action against internet fraud is part of its efforts to curb financial crimes in Nigeria. The agency has been working to tackle various forms of cybercrime, including internet fraud, and has made several arrests in recent times. The suspects arrested in Ogun State will face prosecution once investigations are completed.
