The Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) has directed 3,598 civil servants who missed the 2021 verification exercise to appear for a re-verification, warning that failure to do so will be taken as evidence of holding fake appointment letters. The exercise will run from August 18 to August 28, 2025, across various ministries and government agencies.
The affected ministries include the Federal Ministries of Agriculture, Defence, Education, Justice, Works, Information, Science and Technology, Aviation, Finance, Interior, and the State House. Officers are required to check their names on the commission’s website ((link unavailable)), the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation’s website ((link unavailable)), and on the notice boards of their ministries.
During the re-verification exercise, officers are expected to present originals and photocopies of their appointment and promotion letters, gazette of appointment and confirmation, staff change letter, and July 2025 IPPIS payslip. Officers who have been posted out of their ministry, are on secondment or transfer, or on study leave are also required to check the websites for their names.
The FCSC warned that any officer who fails to turn up for the exercise will be adjudged to be holding a fake letter of appointment and will face dismissal. The commission emphasized that no further extension will be granted to officers who fail to participate in the exercise. The highest numbers of affected officers are in the Ministries of Information (592), Education (506), and Labour (440).
The re-verification exercise aims to weed out ghost workers and ensure the integrity of the civil service payroll. This move is part of the government’s efforts to sanitize the system and eliminate fraudulent practices. Officers who have recently appeared before the commission for the exercise need not appear again.
