Tragedy struck on Sunday in Auchi, Edo State, when a multiple-vehicle collision involving two trucks — one belonging to Dangote Cement and another yet to be identified — and a Mercedes GLK claimed the lives of three persons. The accident occurred in front of the Omega Fire Ministry around midday, drawing crowds of shocked worshippers who had just closed from service. Eyewitnesses said the Dangote truck lost control and rammed into several vehicles, including the GLK, which had three occupants.

A viral video from the scene captured the chaos, with voices urging bystanders to restrain the truck driver while others struggled to rescue survivors. Unfortunately, all three occupants of the GLK were rushed to hospital but later confirmed dead. The Dangote truck caught fire in the aftermath of the crash but was eventually extinguished by emergency responders.

Reacting to the tragedy, the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministry, Apostle Johnson Suleman, described the incident as avoidable, blaming it on recklessness and the poor training of truck drivers. He accused haulage companies of endangering lives by overworking drivers, many of whom, he alleged, operate under the influence of drugs or without valid licences. Suleman stressed that while government had a role to play in fixing roads, transport companies must also take responsibility for employing and supervising competent drivers.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, Moses Yamu, who said investigations were ongoing. “I can confirm that three vehicles were involved: two trucks and one GLK Benz. The occupants of the Benz were evacuated to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead. The Dangote truck also caught fire but was brought under control,” Yamu stated.

The accident has once again renewed public concern over the safety of heavy-duty trucks on Nigerian highways, with calls mounting on both government and private organisations to enforce stricter safety measures to prevent further loss of lives.
