Manchester City defender Ruben Dias has signed a new contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2029, with an option for a further year. The 28-year-old Portugal international, whose previous deal was due to expire in 2027, has been rewarded with the extension after establishing himself as a cornerstone of Pep Guardiola’s side since his arrival from Benfica in 2020.
Dias, signed for £65 million, made an immediate impact in his debut campaign, winning the Premier League Player of the Year award and helping City to domestic dominance. Over the past five years, he has been instrumental in the club’s success, playing a central role in four Premier League title wins, as well as triumphs in the Champions League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup. His leadership and defensive stability have made him one of the most important figures in the squad.
Reacting to the deal, Dias expressed delight at extending his stay in Manchester. “I am incredibly happy today. I love Manchester – it is my home now – and I love the Manchester City fans. When I think about the trophies we have won and how we have played our football during my time here, I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else,” he said. The club’s director of football, Hugo Viana, praised the defender as “a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch” and described the contract extension as a major boost for the team’s long-term plans.
City are now expected to turn their attention to securing the futures of other key players. England defender John Stones and Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva are both entering the final year of their contracts, while experienced stars Ilkay Gundogan and goalkeeper Ederson also have less than 12 months remaining. Negotiations are anticipated in the coming months to avoid uncertainty over their futures.
Several other first-team regulars remain under contract for the medium term, with Spanish midfielder Rodri, England playmaker Phil Foden, Swiss defender Manuel Akanji, and Dutch centre-back Nathan Ake all having two years left on their deals. Meanwhile, 19-year-old defender Rico Lewis is reported to be close to signing a new five-year contract as City look to secure stability across the squad.
