Oseloka Obi, son of politician Peter Obi, has responded to the flurry of online speculation surrounding viral restaurant photos of him with British-Nigerian Kent Okwesa, stressing that his professional and personal associations should not be fodder for idle gossip—but offer opportunity for perspective amid more pressing societal matters.
Photos taken in August 2025 showing Oseloka sitting close to Okwesa in a restaurant quickly sparked debates across social media. In response, Oseloka issued a composed statement highlighting his work in theatre and filmmaking—fields that naturally involve collaboration with individuals across diverse identities and orientations.
In his address, Oseloka dismissed the idea that his lifestyle or choices should carry political weight, clarifying, “My father is the one in politics, not me.” He went on to emphasise that assigning political motives to his personal life reflects poorly on the character of those fueling unfounded narratives.
Comedian Seyi Law also weighed in, calling for an end to the politicisation of family life. He drew attention to how during Peter Obi’s 2023 campaign, his own family endured backlash—not due to wrongdoing, but because of political association. Seyi Law urged Nigerians not to treat public figures’ relatives as targets in broader political disputes.
By addressing the controversy head-on yet with dignity, Oseloka Obi attempted to shift the discourse away from speculation and toward more meaningful conversation—asserting that the nation’s attention would better serve tackling the weighty challenges Nigeria currently faces.
