The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has approved the promotion of 49 Deputy Directors to the rank of Director across various departments in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). The development followed the release of results from the administration’s first-ever Computer-Based Promotion Examination, conducted on August 12, 2025, at the National Open University, Duste-Alhaji Study Centre in Bwari Area Council.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications to the Minister, Lere Olayinka, the exercise was undertaken to address the backlog of promotion arrears from 2023 to 2025 for officers on Grade Level 16. According to him, the computer-based model was introduced to enhance transparency, ensure merit-based assessments, and eliminate undue influence in the promotion process. A 60 per cent pass mark was set to fast-track the release of results and align with technology-driven standards.
Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission, Emeka Eze, disclosed that the newly promoted directors would occupy 49 of the 63 declared vacancies across departments. He explained that the Education Officer Cadre produced the highest number of successful candidates, with 20 officers promoted, while the Accountant Cadre followed with nine. Other cadres such as Civil Engineering, Social Welfare, Tourism, Fisheries, and Medical Officers each recorded a single promotion, reflecting one eligible officer per vacancy.
Eze further revealed that the competitive process attracted significant interest, with 820 Education Officers vying for 20 slots, while the Administration Cadre saw 12 eligible candidates competing for 10 positions. He described the promotion as a landmark step in repositioning the FCT civil service, ensuring that only qualified and deserving officers assume leadership roles.
The FCTA had earlier announced that the introduction of the CBT model was aimed at restoring credibility and fairness to its promotion process, setting a precedent for future examinations. With the approval of the new directors, the administration says it is confident of strengthening efficiency, accountability, and service delivery within the capital territory.
